Taxpayers have questioned why the Township did not present the proposed safety renewal and increase as separate asks on the ballot versus packaging them together. This would have allowed the community a choice to renew the current safety millage without accepting the increase. Some taxpayers feel as though they were forced into accepting and voting "yes" on the millage increase because a "no" vote would have eliminated the safety millage entirely.
As the Freeland community grows, the tax base grows, which in turn increases the Township's property tax revenue to support the police and fire departments. We entrust our hard earned money to our elected representatives and we expect them to spend our tax dollars responsibly.
In relation to the fire apparatus millage that passed, are you satisfied with the answer to the question of why Freeland is in need of a new fire truck that will cost $1,000,000? Have you wondered or asked your elected representatives if there will be a long-term savings plan to provide for these needs in the future instead of going to the taxpayers and asking for a tax increase?
This post is not a negative toward our police officers and fire department volunteers and personnel. Freeland's police and fire departments are very much appreciated and respected by the many people who live here. Freeland is a wonderful, family-friendly and safe community. This post is a call to taxpayers to be informed and pay attention to how your tax dollars are being spent. Contact elected officials and ask them some of the questions above or share your feedback with them. Only an informed and engaged taxpayer base can hold our elected officials accountable and require transparency from those we put in office to represent us. Elected officials need to earn and then maintain the trust of the community they serve.
